"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming..."
Beach life, it's the only life we'd like to know.
Until the day comes when we retire to our tropical seafront property, we'll make do with the best of British beaches, lidos and swimming pools.
And happily, too, because what a selection they are! There's enough here to fill the occasional summer day, with heaps more choices to peruse on the app: go to discover and select outdoor category or spot the beaches on the map!
It's hugged by a road, which isn't to everyone's tastes, but for a high-speed link to the heart of kiss-me-quick action, you can do no worse. "Packed at sunny weekends but fun," says a parent. Set back from a growing must-see town with fabulous bars and quirky, cool shops.
"We like going before school, despite the mini mission that can sometimes be," tips one mum. Large with new flooring, next to Gospel Oak train station, it's mostly made up of concrete paving and has one small slide to entertain the really young. But yes, brilliant.
"Definitely book in advance, better still, go on an inset day," says this dad of 3. Aqua parks don't get much cleaner (well it is new) or more fun, with long slides for the fearless. Plus wave machines and cascading waterfalls. Queues can also be long, but the slides are worth the wait – which one is your favourite?
Loved by those in the know. By this tipper, too, who says: "Sandy, rustic, and just what you want from a traditional day trip to the seaside". Victorian style beach huts hint at the aristocratic and royal clientele that once visited. Feel those regal vibes!
"It's been refurbished and is nicer than ever!" says a local to N8. Grassy borders, with a large, heated toddler pool and new changing rooms, the only drawback is: "it has timed morning and afternoon sessions at weekends, less than 3 hours".
"It's the only Grade II Listed coastal lido in the UK " says this mum of one. Five miles east of Brighton, the Saltdean Lido has reopened in 2017, now restored to its 1930s glory! The pool is heated so you don't have to worry about the weather anymore 🙂 Or should you?
Ahh, the memories of piling into the car as dawn broke, singing all the way, past the scary woods "where the goblins lived", to get that coveted, rare, parking space, then playing on the sand until evening. "Thumbs up," agrees this dad.
In the heart of Hipsterville, those lucky old hipsters... this is a wonderful pool. Heated and floodlit in the evenings, no less! Over a quarter of a million swimmers visit each year, a figure that is “unheard of” for an open-air pool," reported The Guardian. "Adored by the community, cheap, and a nice walk across the park."
"Ponds are clean, with a few ducks here and there..." says a mum of 3. No longer simply the go-to pool of choice for savvy locals, much publicity has brought an influx of wild swimmers from far and wide, so yes, take the kids why not!
