Top [tested] Tips for Parents

half term

A short holiday approx halfway through a school term.
"It's half term in a few weeks, I'd better be quick to book some holiday camps."

"Failing to plan is planning to fail," said Alan Laiken. Who's Alan Lakein, we hear you ask? A well known author on personal time management, no less, an issue that trumps the best of us.

We've got holidays pretty much nailed now, though. Our general routine is: arrange a sleepover swap; ask a relative to help; work from home one day; oh and book a camp or two well in advance, knowing that the good ones, especially those lightest on the purse, get booked out.

Here are some recommendations from the app that will delight the kids this October half term. There are plenty more, you just have to join the party to see them.

First Hand Experiences

Thank you to one of our parents on Kinfo for recommending this nature-based holiday camp in Kent. “Kids celebrate the outdoors through food, art, theatre and song!” Groups journey to a wood, park or beach, they picnic, sing songs around a piano and get arty – all the while discussing questions to connect with the surroundings.

Firetech Holiday Camps

A mum of 2 girls tells us that the instructors are super bright and friendly and the sessions are impressively productive. Coding, gaming and VR are all covered for ages 9+`at venues in NW3 and SW10 London. Can't afford that, then be inspired here.

Paddington Rec

A mum of 3 recommends booking these holiday sessions in advance. The football, tennis, cricket and basketball all-dayers are popular! Enrol at the main reception of Paddington Recreation Ground, or try calling (see phone number on the app). Oh and hunt down the park's wild garden... if it's good enough for a princess 👑

Beaumont Camps

Mill Hill is where this parent enrolled in some holiday TLC for her 3 kids, but you can find Beaumont Camps in venues all over Surrey and London. Split into age groups (5-7, 8-11 and teens) there are 40+ activities to choose from, spread across six sessions per day, including zorbing and archery, quad biking and baking.

QPR Holiday Soccer School

In the grounds of QPR F.C. and schools of NW10, the Queen's Park soccer camps are a fun and energetic holiday option. “Well organised professional coaches,” says this Kinfo user. (Waving our flag of impartiality, here are links to rival Arsenal and West Ham camps, not on the app! Have you been?).

Sylvia Young Theatre School

Emma Bunton. Rita Ora. Billie Piper. Denise Outen. An alumni of pop singers and presenters, alongside other musical theatre talent, has done very well indeed. Offer your mini self-starter the gift of a half term 5-day theatre club: a week of drama, street, jazz dance and drama.

Lee Valley Star Track

Star Track is the name of the East London athletic camps that offer aspiring athletes expert tuition in hurdles, high jump, sprints, javelin and more. “Affordable fun using Olympic equipment,” tips this dad. Sounds brilliant to us. Tue-Fri, 9am-4pm.

Lee Valley Riding Centre

If your kid prefers being carried around by four legs, visit these stables. "Go for a walk on Hackney Marshes but take time to say hello to the horses," says this parent. Better still, have a half term riding lesson! (Better still times a thousand, sign up for the half term "Own a Pony Day". Kids only, sorry).

The School Run Playlist on Spotify

All this half term chat is all very well, but there are still a few weeks of the school run that will need soundtracking.
We've added great songs to our long list of classics!

REMEMBER our next "Kids and Technology" event takes place in Central London on Oct 15 here

And we have a date for Cambridge too! Oct 11, more information here.  Please tell your friends!

(Your half terms need this. Honest).
